Serum Lipid Profile in Preterm and Term Appropriate for Gestational Age Indian Newborns: A Hospital Based Comparative Study

چکیده
Background: Cardiovascular disease is a common cause of death in developed countries and also is a rising trend in developing countries. Aim: The objective of this study was to compare lipid profile and atherogenic indices in term and preterm neonates. Methods: A total of 60 neonates were selected which were grouped on the basis of gestational age and birth weight. Umbilical venous blood was collected from them. Lipid profile (total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, HDL cholesterol, VLDL cholesterol, triglycerides), apolipoproteins (apo B and apo A-I) and atherogenic index were evaluated and compared. Studentt test (unpaired) was applied to test the significance. Results: Mean serum cholesterol and LDL was significantly high in preterm .Mean TC / LDL ratio of preterm group 3.17, term 2.64 (p< 0.006).Mean Apolipoprotein A-1 in preterm 78.37 mg/dl, term 76.51 mg/dl (P<0.67). Mean apolipoprotein B / A-1 ratio in preterm 0.45, term 0.39, (p<0.11) showing worse profile in preterm. Conclusions: These findings demonstrate a trend towards worse lipid profile in preterm SGA new-borns. There is a need to investigate if this atherogenic lipid profile is a marker for future cardiovascular diseases.

Comparative Study of Cord Lipid Profile in Small for Gestational Age and Appropriate for Gestational Age Newborn
Background: This study was conducted to compare the cord blood lipid profile in term small for gestation (SGA) and appropriate for gestational age (AGA) babies as determination of cord blood lipid profile is useful screening tool for early detection of babies at higher risk as atherosclerosis has its genesis in childhood. Methods: Study Design: Hospital based cross sectional study. Setting: ne...
متن کاملCord Blood Lipid Profile in Premature, Near-Term and Term Newborn Infants
Introduction: The fetus needs a considerable amount of cholesterol for the development of tissues and organs. Studies have suggested that genetic and environmental factors influence the composition of cord blood lipoproteins. In this study, we aim to assess the effect of gestational age, sex and birth weight on the cord blood lipoproteins. Methods: We collected umbilical cord blood samples fr...
متن کاملEvaluation of the Predictive Value of Umbilical Cord Serum Bilirubin Level for the Development of Subsequent Hyperbilirubinemia in Term and Late-Preterm Neonates
Background: Considering the increasing rates of early hospital discharge and kernicterus in healthy full term newborns, timely identification of neonates at risk of severe hyperbilirubinemia is of great significance. The aim of this study was to investigate the predictive value of umbilical cord serum (UCS) bilirubin level for subsequent hyperbilirubinemia. Moreover, we compared the predictive ...
متن کاملSmall-for-gestational-age versus appropriate-for-gestational-age: Comparison of cord blood lipid profile & insulin levels in term newborns (SAGA-ACT study)
BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVES The genesis of atherosclerotic lesions, a major cardiovascular risk factor starts in the early stage of life. If the premature development of cardiovascular risk factors can be anticipated during childhood, cardiovascular events can be prevented effectively by taking appropriate measures. This study was carried out to assess the role of in utero malnutrition in cardiovas...
متن کاملComparisons of mortality and pre-discharge respiratory morbidities in small for gestational age and appropriate-for gestational age premature infants - An Indian Experience
Background: There is an assumption that fetus with restricted growth with an inappropriate intrauterine environment lies under stress. Although small-for-gestational-age (SGA) infants have higher mortality, difference in the outcome of SGA and appropriate-for-gestational-age (AGA) infants regarding respiratory morbidity is controversial. It seems that respiratory morbidities in SGA neonates is ...
